Let the Lark Go Native

A controversy with roots in the valley where I live in Oregon continues to brew as I post this. Google “The Flying Lark” to check out the news stories. It’s already boiled up to something of interest statewide, and may yet make it into national headlines. Here’s my take as a bard doing what bards have done for centuries – telling tales and stirring up trouble with our words.

Well then, if Travis Boersma really cares

to launch the Flying Lark’s expansive wings,

he need but cede to Tribes its total shares

To hand the land, the Lark and all it bears

(a gesture grand, no pox, no terms, no strings)

Return to Tribes what’s long in spirit theirs

If numbered in the ranks of his affairs

he counts a passion for the sport of kings,

this simple act would prove he really cares

Once native-owned, all snags and legal snares,

the licensing and legislative things,

resolve when Mr. Boersma cedes its shares

If promised jobs add weight to guilt he bears,

its open doors release him from those pangs

That is, if Travis Boersma really cares

A loss, for him, too small to leave its scars

The Lark in tribal hands most righteous rings

So then, if Travis Boersma really cares,

he need but cede to Tribes its total shares
